The global polymer foam market is substantial and is dominated by polyurethane (PU). Rigid foams are ideal in applications such as packaging, building and construction as insulation (due to low thermal transfer) or in automotive, which is one of the fastest growing segments. Within the flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) market, around a third of the volume is attributable to bedding and furniture applications.
Turbostratic graphene based PU foam has demonstrated better mechanical properties than PU foam with no additives or PU foam with other types of graphene. Specifically, compression strength and heat deflection temperature were improved by 40% vs the PU foam with no additives and improved by 20% vs the PU foam with other forms of graphene. Additionally, sound absorption coefficient was improved by 17% vs the PU foam with no additives. Turbostratic graphene can also enable fabrication of PU foam with higher levels of bio-based materials than currently done
